Well almost …. :D Would you believe I run out of the Faded Jeans colour. Got plenty of the other colours left over so I reckon I must’ve had a dodgy ball sigh I’m about 22 pom poms short which is really a bit annoying, still it does look nice. What do you think?

I’m really proud of it and LJ is thrilled to bits with it. Sooooo what about the missing pom poms? Well I’m going to have to send off for some more of it from the US but what we’ve come up with is for some cushions to go with the rug.

In the same issue of Crochet Today they have a vintage pattern by Red Heart which has been given an updated feel using Pomp-a-Doodle yarn.

I’ve got some money sitting in PayPal so I’m going to make 2 of them for her. One in Faded Jeans and the other colour LJ chose was the Plush Plum. So I’ll be ordering them this week. Even if I can’t get the cushions done in time for her I can always send them on later.

So, now I’ve finished that project what have I got on the hook next. Here’s a clue

Those of you who crochet or are members of Ravelry will undoubtedly know looking at those gorgeous bright colours. For the rest of you, you’ll have to wait and find out ;)

Hi there and welcome to part 2 of my Pom Pom Rug post. Last time I spoke about the base, today it’s all about the pom-poms ;)

For the top layer, I’m using Red Heart Pomp-a-Doodle that I got from the States. It comes in a variety of colours, but for this project I went with the original colours in the pattern as these are what DD wanted.

So, starting from left to right the colours are Faded Jeans, Plush Plum, Shoreline and Berries & Cream.  It’s a novelty type yarn which looks great for this sort of project. You could also use it for cushions, pouffes, scarves and toys. I bought 10 balls in total, 2 in Faded Jeans and Berries & Cream, 3 in Plush Plum and Shoreline.

The yarn looks like this

Basically, you stitch with the “stringy” bit. When you get to the pom pom bit, just ensure you don’t bring it through the loop of your crocheting or knitting.

It took me a couple of rounds to get used to the feel of the yarn but once you’ve got yourself in a rhythm it’s very easy. Obviously, every round will take longer to do as you’re working from the inside outwards. But put on your favourite film or plug your iPod in and you’ll be surprised how quickly the time goes.

Round 5 – 2 rounds in Berries & Cream, 3 rounds in Plush Plum.

You can see the top loop exposed in the above picture. This is where the pom pom yarn is crocheted through.

Round 9

Additional rounds in Shoreline, Faded Jeans and Berries & Cream.

Round 20

Well, almost round 20 :) . I spent most of Saturday afternoon and evening working on it. I was feeling a bit under the weather so once DH had left to the footie I got my self comfy on the settee, put the TV on and just sat working away on it.  There’s only 8 rounds left to do, so I’m hoping to have it finished by the end of the week.

Got the in-laws popping over later on this afternoon so I’ll be showing it off to MIL.  She is a wonderful crocheter and has made over the years some beautiful doily work. I hope it’ll get her seal of approval but if not, I’m not bothered as I’m just really proud of it and DD can’t wait for it to be finished. Once it’s finished I’ll definitely be posting lots of  photos, and LJ has said that once she get to Uni she’ll send me some so I can see how well it brightens up her dorm.

Don’t forget to leave some comments if you feel compelled to. I’ve had some lovely feedback from the ladies on Phoenix Forum.

Thank you so much  kiss

Hi again. As you all know by now my current WIP is the Pom Pom Rug. This was designed by Ellen Gormley and was featured in July August edition of Crochet Today

The pattern itself is very simple. A circular base using Red Heart Super Saver in Magenta.

Here’s a tension swatch of 3 rounds

As you can see it’s just treble crochet but worked in the back loops. This leaves the front loops to work the pom pom yarn through.
Here’s a closer view.

The finished base should measure 40″, but I think I can safely say now that I have a tendency to crochet a bit tight. My finished base measures 36″. Tension is the one key factor that you must knit or crochet to, especially if you are making garments. Now that I have more experience of crocheting this is something that I will have to keep in mind. However, for these sort of projects, it’s not too big a deal, so I’m glad I didn’t have to frog it and start again.

Here’s the finished base

The pattern said to use 3 skeins but I ended up using just under 2 skeins. Now Red Heart Saver is allegedly America’s best selling for the past 70 years. I must admit that it has quite a coarse feel to it, which, for this project, doesn’t really matter as you would need something hard wearing for the base. I’m not too sure whether it softens up in the wash, but I found it quite scratchy. Not the sort of yarn I would personally choose to use to make up a garment. But like, I said, it may come up nice and soft after a wash.

So, that’s the first stage of the process. It really didn’t take long to make up as the yarn is like an Aran and worked on a 6mm hook, it grew very quickly. Taking it to the local football match last Saturday gave me plenty of time to really plough through it. They’re only our local town’s footie team. They don’t really play very well, but DH, George videos all the home matches for the few fans that turn up and he also runs their website

OK, part 2 will follow later. Don’t forget that you can always have a peek at my Ravelry page to keep you updated with pictures and other queued projects.

Beware though if you are a knitter and/or crocheter, Ravelry should come with a warning :D
